Creating God in your Own Image
They say that Man was created in God's image. I've read on a website: "Don’t make the mistake of creating God in your own image, you were created in God’s own image. You are the object of the Heavenly Father’s love—so much so that He created you in His very own likeness."
In "Bird by Bird", Anne Lamott talks about how nobody sits down and writes elegant first drafts. But then she mentions that she does know ONE person who does, but she and her friends do not like her very much. They do not think (and I quote) that she has a rich inner life or that God likes her or can even stand her.
What is funny is that she says that she mentioned this to her priest friend Tom. She said that he said that "you can safely assume you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do."
Whether or not that is an actual true exchange doesn't matter. What matters is that this is another prime example of the fineness of Anne Lamott's writing. It's probably one of the funniest lines I've read in a long time (excluding anything from "Pearls Before Swine" or on the show "Eureka").
There are all sorts of more esoterical questions around whether God really created us in his image and I am not going to get into it at all.... but I wonder just how much of religion is based on individuals creating God in our their image? Interesting question, is it not?

Bird by Bird
I bought this book awhile ago, and just "found" it again. I buy a lot of books and don't read them just because I put them "somewhere" and then forget about it. I also spend a lot of time on the computer and unfortunately, I cannot read and play games/read blogs/news/etc. at the same time. I know.......it's a malfunction.
Anyhow, this book was great. I've not read all of it yet, but just the intro and the first chapter taught me wonderful things such as the fact that I am not the only insane writer in the universe. She's almost as nuts as I am. Or, I'm almost as nuts as she is. Whichever works. But, it's a good nuts. Really.
The first thing that truly inspired me was the concept of writing about what you can see through a 1" picture frame. That really made things clear - I get overwhelmed when I think in terms of "a whole novel", or, "a whole how-to guide". Keeping it contained in a 1" frame is EXACTLY what I need to do and I'm grateful to Anne Lamott for writing this down in this book. And, I'm thankful that Borders had this book, and I'm grateful for Kevin for mentioning it was a good book.

Recent Movies
We went and saw "Hancock" last weekend. I thought it was good. Will Smith is likable, no matter how bad he tries to play. I still like "Independance Day" the best, tho. I wasn't much into "Men in Black", unlike 99% of the rest of the American population.
Also saw "Wall-E". What a disappointment! I thiought it was too long and too preachy. Do all cartoons now have to have something to do with being 'green' (and I'm not talking Kermit here)? They did that with a couple other movies, too. I like "Toy Story" and "Finding Nemo". There's no way that "Wall-E" will be rated that high in my book.
I just had someone say to me "It better be worth my time to read" after I mentioned that I was writing in my blog. Can you blog in prison? Just wondering.............
Anyhow, we also saw "Wanted". This was not in the same weekend. I like "Wanted" better than "Wall-E" for two reasons.

- Angelina Jolie was in "Wanted".
- Eve tended to sound like she was whining when she said "Wallllllll-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE".
- That scene when the car got flipped the car over and the guy shot the man thru the open sunroof was AWESOME. Man! The stunts were amazing!
Not sure what movie I'm looking forward to now. I was so excited about "Wall-E" and was so disappointed.............. Maybe I'll just stick to television. My two REALLY can't waits are:
- The last few "Dr. Who" episodes. I know what happens and all I can say is ..."wow".
- EUREKA on July 29th on the Sci-FI channel. This is my favorite show of all time ever. And I'm old (I can remember when "Mr. Ed" had new episodes on...so you know I'm old). I will blog about it...........when the time is right.
